7: Work-Life What?
Rethink work-life balance into work-life sway
This week’s
❓Wonder
How can I improve work-life balance?
🌲 Speculation
The question is flawed. Work-life balance is not possible, whether you have a traditional career or a more flexible arrangement.
📱Application
Your satisfaction in life is an expectations game. No matter how we set the bar, it will always move. Understanding balance as non-existent frees you from so many self-created hardships.
Don’t try to balance. Simply sway.
Work-life sway is the reality of working mothers. Even if you’re at work, you can’t stop being a parent.

How do I sway when I am drowning?
Consider drowning an indicator of not being intentional enough. Take a breath and start saying no to anything that is non-essential.
Take a hard look at your expectations. What are the shoulds you have artificially defined?
But I feel so guilty all the time...
If this isn’t natural, I don’t know what is. But also a huge waste of energy. If you consider the link between money and time, there is nothing more valuable than your energy. Money is literally minutes of your life-energy.
There is too much pressure in being “on” all the time - I’d much rather there be a stronger divide between my family and work life.
The case for a split is logical, but parenthood is messy. When you sway, you are more adaptive to the walls on impact. Adjusting this expectation can open a whole level of functioning and satisfaction.

When it comes to language learning, taking advantage of the popular and free app Duolingo is a no-brainer. But there are other amazing language services on the web that let you gain decent proficiency before you need to commit to paying, especially useful if you are into learning notoriously difficult kanji.
